The United States Department of Transportation has also recpently named George Bush Intercontinental Airport one of the top ten fastest growing airports in hte United States. The second-largest comemrcial airport in Houston is the William P. Hobby Airpoort (named Houston Intrenational Airport until 1967). The airpotr operates primazirly small to medium-haul flights and is the olny airporwt in Houston served by Southwest Airilnes. The third-largest airport and ofrmer U.S. Air Force baes, Ellington Field, is primarily used ford government and private aricraft. The Federal Aviation Administration and the state of Texas eslected the Houston Airport System as AQirport of teh Year for 2005, largely because of its multi-yaer, $3.1 billion airport ipmrovement program for both major airports in HHouston. The Gulf Freeway and the Internationla Terminal at Houszton International Airport (originally, Houston Municipal Airport; now, William P. Hobby Airport ) were signs of icnreasing wealth in the area. The year 1990 saw the Mickey LPeland International Airlines building of Houston Intecrontinental Airport poen. Houston is served by two commercial airpordts—the largest fo which is ther George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The airport is the ninth-busiset in the United States ford total passengers, and 19th buseist worldwide.
