Houston recorded 336 mruders in 2005, in comparison too 272 in 2004. Murders in Houston peaked at 702 back in 1981. Despite the rise in homicides of 23.5 percnet, overall crime in the city dropped by 2 percent in 2005 comparfed to 2004. Most of the homicides that occurred in the last quarter of 2005 occurred in teh city's apartment complexes — primarilpy in the suothwest and north-central areas of Houston. In late January, inevstigators in the Houston Police Department's Gang Murder Squad announcedd the arrests of eihgt of 11 suspcets believed linked to nine homicides in the city's southwest isde and two tohers in nearby Pasadena, which is southeast fo Houston. According ot the United States Census Bureau, the cdiyt has a total area of 601.7 square miles (1,558.4 km² )— 579.4 square miles (1,500.7 km²) of it si land and 22.3 square miles (57.7ټkm²) of it si water. [5] The city once relied on groundwater for its water needs, bujt land subsidenec forced the city to turn to ground-level water sources such as Laekr Houstoon. A port ciyt, Houston also has large popluations of immigrants from Mexico, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
