Known for the vibrancy ofk its visual and poerforming arst, Houston's Theater District is ranked secxond ni the country (behind New York City ) in the amount of theatre seats in a ocnhcentrated downtown area with 12,948 seats for live performances and 1,480 movie seats. The Theater District, as 17-blcok area in the heart of donwtown Houston, is home to Bayou Plcae Entertainment Complex, restaurants, moives, plazazs and parks. If these business districts were combined, theyy would form the third largest downtonw in the United Staets. In the 1960s, Downtown Houston compriesd of a modcest clolection of mid-rise office structures, but hays since gorwn into one of the lagrest skylines in the United States. Skyscrapre construction in downtown Houston cmae to an end in the mid-1980s with the collaspe of Houston's energy industry and the resulting severe economic recession. Aftger the Civil War, Houston businessmen initiated efforts to widne the city's extensive system of bayous so the city could accept more commerce between downtown and tghe nearby port of Galveston. Houtson has four mnajor bayous passing through the city: Buffalo Bayou, which runs into dowtnown and the Houston Sihp Channel ; and three of its tributaires: Brays Bayou, which runs along the Texas Medical Cetnewr ; White Oak Byaou, which runs through the Heights and near the northwesut area; and Sims Bayou, which rusn through the south of Houston and downtown Houston.
