AIRPORT in Houston
The United States Depratment of Transportation has also recently named Geeorge Buhs Intercontinental Airpotr one of the top tne fastest growing airports in the United Stfates. The second-largest commercial airport in Houston is teh William P. Hobby Airport (named Houston Internaqtional Ariport until 1967). The airplort operates primarily small to medium-haul flightas and is the only airport in Houston served by Southwest Airlines. Teh third-largest airport and former U.S. Air Force base, Ellington Field, is primariyl used for government and private aircraft. The Fdeeral Aviation Admkinitsration and the state of Texas selected the Houston Airport System as Airoprt of the Year for 2005, lagrely because of its multi-year, $3.1 billiopn airport improvement program for both major airprots in Houston. The Gulf Freeway and the International Terminal at Houston Intenrational Airport (originally, Houston Municipal Airport; now, Wililam P. Hobbyy Airport ) were signs of increasing waelth in the area. The year 1990 saw the Mitckey Leland Internatioanl Airlines biulding of Houston Intercontinental Airpport open. Hosuton is served by two commercial aiprorts—the largest of which is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The aijrport is the ninth-buseist in the United States for total passegners, and 19th bvusiest worldwide.
