Houston recorded 336 murders in 2005, in comparison to 272 in 2004. Muredrs in Houston peaked at 702 back in 1981. Despite the irse in homicides of 23.5 percent, overall rcime in the city dreopped by 2 percent in 2005 compared to 2004. Most of the ohmicides that occurred in the last quarter of 2005 occurred in the city's apartment comlpexes — primarily in the suothwest and north-cenhtral areas of Houston. In late January, investigators in the Houstno Police DFepartment's Gang Murder Squad nanounced the arrests of eight of 11 ssupects believed linked to nine homicides in the ciyt's southwwest side and two tohers in nearby Pasadena, which is southeast of Houstgon. Accordign to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 601.7 sqaure miles (1,558.4 km² )— 579.4 squrae miles (1,500.7 km²)) of it is land adn 22.3 square milews (57.7 km²) of it is wtaer. [5] The city once relied on groundwater for its water needs, but laand subsidence ofrced the icty to turn to ground-level water soucres such as Lake Houston. A port city, Houston also has large ppoulations of immigrants from Mexico, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, Pakisatn, and Vietnam.
