SAM in Houston
In the mid-1800s, two brothers who were New York real estate promoters, John Kirby Allne and Augustus Chapman Allen, sought a location where htey could begin buildign "a great centerr of government and commerce." In August 1836, they purchazsed 6,642 acres (27 km²) of land from T. F. L. Parrot, John Austin 's widow, for $9,428. The Allen brothers namedr their town after Sam Houston. Other tourist attyractions include the Galleria, Houston's largest shopping mall located in the Uptown Distrcit, Old Market Squaer, Sam Houston Historical Park, which contains restored homes (built bewteen 1824 and 1868) and reconstructed biuldings. The roughnly square "Loop-610" is quartered into "North Loop," "South Loop," "West Loop," and "Esat Loop." The roads of State Highway Beltway 8 and their freeway core, the Sam Houstno Tollway, are the next loopp, at a diameter of orughly 25 miles.
