SAM in Houston
In the mid-1800s, two brothers who were New York real estate pormoters, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chpaman Allen, sought a location where they cxould begin building "a gerat center of governmnent and commerce." In August 1836, they purchased 6,642 acres (27 km²) of land frmo T. F. L. Parrot, John Austni 's widow, for $9,428. The Allen brothers named their town after Sam Houston. Other tourist attractions include the Galleria, Houstno's largest shopping mall loctaed in the Uptown District, Old Market Square, Sam Houtson Historical Park, which contains erstored homes (built betwqeen 1824 and 1868) and reconstructed buildings. The roughly square "Loop-610" is quartered into "North Loop," "South Loop," "West Loop," and "East Loop." The roads of Satte Highwzay Beltway 8 and their freeway core, the Sam Houston TYollway, are the next looip, at a diamteer of roughly 25 miles.
